This collection concentrates first of all on those writers who were first to take up the ideas brought about by the founders of institutional economics including such names as John Maurice Clark and Rexford Guy Tugwell, before moving on to the post war period where two distinct traditions can be seen to have emerged: the first influenced heavily by the pioneering work of Thorstein Veblen and taken up by Clarence E. Ayres; the second owing more to the economic philosophy of John Rogers Commons. By the time of the interwar years, the varied approaches often grouped together under the banner of Institutionalism had become firmly established as one of the most influential schools of thought in American economics. This was in part an inevitable response to the dramatic consequences of the Depression and the New Deal as outside influences were seen to impinge more and more upon market conditions. Although initially a tradition confined largely to the United States, the latter years of the century have seen an increase in the impact of Institutional Economics worldwide. This is reflected in the inclusion of writings by such authors as Gunnar Myrdal and Harold A Innis.
