Retired NYPD Police Officer, Private Investigator, and Author
In every community, the police hold an extraordinary responsibility. Officers are entrusted with the authority to protect life, preserve order, investigate crime, and enforce the law fairly. With that authority comes an equally important obligation: accountability.
Michael Bland's book confronts a subject that many institutions would rather avoid-what happens when oversight is weak, transparency is lacking, and the people expected to uphold the laws are not held to the same standards as everyone else. This is not an easy subject. It is not comfortable for police officers, public officials, or citizens who want to believe that the system always works as it should. But it is necessary.
As a former law-enforcement professional, I understand that the overwhelming majority of officers enter this profession for honorable reasons. They accept difficult assignments, work long hours, respond to danger, and serve communities under pressures most people will never experience. Their work deserves respect. Yet respect for the profession cannot mean silence when misconduct, favoritism, retaliation, political influence, or failures of leadership undermine public trust.
