What happens when you mix teenage boys, a fight club and ethnic rivalries? You get war. Romeo Makhlouf knows the rules. Stick with your own kind. Don't dob on your mates or even on your enemies. Respect the family. But even unwritten rules are made for breaking... Fight clubs, first loves and family ties are pushed to the limit in Helen Chebatte's explosive novel for young adults.

Industry Reviews

"This is Boys ‘R’ Us meets Hate is Such a Strong Word in all the best ways. It tells the story of the danger of boys and their masculinity, peer pressure, “national pride”, racism, and trying to belong. It’s a book people should read about feeling different, and the consequences of male pride." –Lost In A Good Book "With a tone reminiscent of the gritty suburban realism of ’90s authors such as Robin Klein (Came Back to Show You I Could Fly) and John Marsden (So Much to Tell You), Bro tackles big themes of identity, family, grief, loyalty, responsibility and racism... A razor-sharp debut that cuts through contemporary social issues with warmth and humour." –Books+Publishing
"Part of the success of Bro is Chebatte’s clever recreation of teenage life. She captures their talk, their attitudes, their experiences. Beyond that, she also examines the role of violence as a resolution to conflict and how family tragedy affects the young. This is the first novel from this talented writer, in which serious ideas are treated with the lightest of touch, and where tragedy is confronted with a rare honesty." –CBCA Reading Time
"An emotional read [that] tackles important issues in a really accessible way." –Aussie Reviews

"Bro is such an important read not only for teens, but for Australians to understand the issue of teen violence within society and to discuss at a national level. Bro should be part of our schools curriculum, in every school library and addressed within youth groups nationwide." –Diva Book Nerd

"A modern-day version of The Outsiders." –MumLyfe
