Furnace woke the day Jean was born, and the dead howled loud enough that almost everyone in Casement Rise heard them. Afterwards, a thin scratch of black smoke rose from behind the hills west of town. Furnace had been lit, and soon it began to call the people of the town to it.

Twelve-year-old Jean must learn to control an ancient power in order to protect her village but her over-protective grandmother has always kept the town safe from monsters, but in protecting Jean, she may have left it too late to teach her how to face the demons on her own.
