The Football GOAT: The Greatest of All Time Collection

What makes this collection different from Matt Oldfield's other football series like Ultimate Football Heroes?

Whilst Ultimate Football Heroes focuses on individual player biographies, The Football GOAT series takes a unique head-to-head comparative approach, pitting legendary players against each other across different eras and playing styles. This interactive format encourages readers to analyse statistics, achievements, and playing styles to make their own informed decision about who deserves the title of Greatest of All Time. The series is also co-authored with Seth Burkett, a former professional footballer, adding authentic playing experience to the storytelling perspective.

How does Seth Burkett's background as a professional footballer enhance this series?

Seth Burkett brings firsthand knowledge of what it takes to compete at the highest levels of football, having played professionally in Brazil for Sorriso EC and in Sri Lanka, as well as competing in futsal. His insider perspective on training, tactics, and the mental demands of professional football adds authenticity and depth to the player comparisons that goes beyond what statistics alone can convey. This combination of Matt Oldfield's proven storytelling ability and Seth's professional playing experience creates a more well-rounded analysis of what makes these players truly great.

Why are these particular player match-ups chosen for the series?

The four head-to-heads represent compelling debates across different football generations and positions, from the eternal Messi versus Ronaldo rivalry that has defined modern football, to comparing emerging superstars Mbappé and Haaland who represent the sport's future. The Pelé versus Maradona comparison bridges football's golden eras, whilst Kane versus Bellingham offers an intriguing English talent showdown between a proven goalscorer and a dynamic midfielder. Each pairing presents genuine arguments for both sides, making the reader's ultimate choice genuinely challenging.

Is this collection suitable for readers who may not be familiar with all the players featured?

Absolutely, as the books are designed to educate readers about each player's career, achievements, and playing style through engaging facts and statistics. The head-to-head format naturally introduces readers to players they may be less familiar with by comparing them with more well-known footballers, making it an excellent way to broaden one's football knowledge. The accessible writing style that made Matt Oldfield's previous series so popular ensures that both casual fans and dedicated football enthusiasts can enjoy and learn from the content.
