The Football School Encyclopedia

How does this encyclopaedia differ from the other Football School books in the series?

The Football School Encyclopedia serves as a comprehensive reference work that consolidates football knowledge across multiple topics, whilst the other books in the series tend to focus on specific formats or themes. For instance, where other titles concentrate on quizzes, jokes, puzzles, or the stories of particular players and teams, this encyclopaedia takes a broader approach by covering everything from nutrition and tactics to mascots and supporters in one volume. It functions as an all-encompassing guide to the beautiful game rather than exploring a single aspect in depth.

What makes Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton particularly qualified to write about football for young readers?

Alex Bellos brings unique credentials as both a mathematics expert and someone who has deeply studied Brazilian football culture, even ghost-writing Pelé's autobiography, which gives him insight into the sport at its highest level. Ben Lyttleton complements this with his work as a football consultant through Soccernomics, where he actually helps professional teams improve their performance, meaning the tactical and strategic information in the book draws from real-world application. Together, they combine academic rigour, international football journalism experience across over 20 countries, and practical consultancy work to create content that is both entertaining and genuinely educational.

Is this encyclopaedia suitable for readers who are new to football or is it aimed at existing fans?

The encyclopaedia is designed to be accessible to readers at various levels of football knowledge, from curious newcomers to dedicated supporters. The book's structure as an encyclopaedia means readers can dip in and out of topics that interest them rather than requiring prior knowledge to follow a narrative. The combination of facts, cartoons, and diverse subjects ranging from breakfast habits to corner-taking techniques suggests an approach that welcomes questions from any starting point, making it ideal for young readers developing their understanding of the sport.

How does the illustration style contribute to the educational content of the book?

Spike Gerrell's distinctive "spiky-nosed" cartoon style, honed through years of work in educational and scientific publications like the New Scientist and Times Educational Supplement, brings a visual accessibility to complex football concepts. His experience illustrating for educational contexts means the cartoons serve a pedagogical purpose beyond mere decoration, helping to break down tactical information, statistical data, and football facts into digestible visual formats. This approach aligns with the Football School philosophy of making learning about football both informative and genuinely enjoyable for younger readers.
