It’s summer vacation, and Robert is off to Camp Chicopee whether he likes it or not (he doesn’t). He’s even managed to make a new friend in Zach, who knows plenty of jokes, and to avoid the irritating Lester, who’s pushy and makes a lot of noise. But every time he thinks camp might be starting to get fun, a new problem pops up to torture him. First, he has to learn how to swim even though he’s terrified of water. Then Zach throws a garden snake at the girls on the bus and for some reason blames Robert. Next Molly the counselor’s whistle disappears, and guess who Zach accuses of stealing it? Robert decides it’s time to avoid Zach, and turns instead to Lester. Robert discovers that Lester isn’t so bad after all when the two boys visit Lester’s big, boisterous family. When Zach vows revenge and Lester steps in to help, Robert learns his lesson about prejudging people and understanding what true friendship is all about. Paul Brewer’s lively illustrations and Barbara Seuling’s trademark fast pacing, twist-and-turn plotting, and vivid characterizations make this an exciting addition to the series.
