He wakes up to a calm ship voice asking a children's question.
"State your name."
He can't remember it. He can't even sit up right.
Then the lights come on. The air tastes thin. And two sealed sleep pods in the next corridor read one word each:
DECEASED.
Ronan Richardson is alone inside a deep-space lighthouse that was never meant to be crewed for long. The beacon is failing. Oxygen is running out. And the ship keeps repeating the same brutal truth:
If the beacon goes out, the fleet behind him dies.
If the fleet dies... Earth follows.
But the threat isn't a missile. It isn't an alien warship.
It's the Bloom—an expanding tear in spacetime where heat moves the wrong way, signals fold into noise, and metal "ages" like it's lived a hundred years in a day. Physics still works... until it doesn't. And Ronan has to keep the lock stable long enough for the Ark Fleet to pass through a corridor that is literally coming apart.
So he does what he does best:
Test. Measure. Break it on purpose. Fix it fast. Repeat.
Every answer buys him minutes.
Every mistake costs him hours.
And the Bloom keeps learning.
Then Ronan finds something worse than the Bloom: a parasite that feeds on the beacon's field. The more he powers the lighthouse, the faster it spreads.
And then he hears a pattern inside the static.
Not human. Not hostile.
Aware.
He calls it KNOT—because its signal looks like reality tied in a loop. KNOT doesn't speak in words. It speaks in structure. In harmonics. In rules Ronan can test.
KNOT wants something.
And it might be the only reason anyone survives.
