Much has been written on the human rights relevance and impacts of the policies and activities of the World Bank and IMF --or International Financial Institutions (IFIs). However while many of the human rights-based critiques of the Bank and Fund purport to link broadly defined reforms with obligations under international human rights law, rarely has this been carried out through a rigorous and in-depth application of international legal rules governing the proper interpretation of the institutionsâ mandates, and rarely have the policy consequences and practical possibilities for human rights integration been explored in any detail. These are the principal gaps that the present book aims to fill, by reference to a sample of the IFIsâ most important and controversial contemporary activities.
Industry Reviews

"Darrow... conveys a true mastery over the dense technocratic and economistic jargon of the IFIs, offering a powerful translation of how human rights can be 'enabled' in the IFIs' operations." --Leiden Journal of International Law, Vol 19/1

"By balancing a legal academic analysis with a rigorous evaluation of policy proposals for the integration of human rights at the Bank and Fund, Darrow appeals to a broad audience of policymakers, international legal experts, and human rights advocates. He bridges a gap between theory and practice in the existing literature on the law of international institutions." --American Journal of International Law

"Alongside popular critiques of the IFIs, a body of academic commentary on their activities, particularly in relation to environmental and human rights issues, has been growing..[this] is the most significant recent contribution to these efforts, and a worthwhile one...One of the great strengths of this book is its engagement with the issues in a concrete and practical manner. . .The book will be of greatest interest to students and academics concerned with human rights and/or the IFIs but it also deserves wider attention.." --New Zealand Law Journal
