David Hampton adapted to the white mans world, still he kept the old ways, his grandfathers ways, in his heart. He believed in Wakan Tanka, and Mother Earth, who would provide him everything he needed. Grandfather had taught him the ways of his ancestors. Each summer they would go into the Black Hills, they would live off the land. Now, you go to the store and buy everything you need. It has not always been that way. He learned to live off the land, his ancestors did; now he would do so also.
Something moved on the bank opposite him and he looked up. There was a woman standing on the bank watching him. She had a Schmauser machinegun pistol hanging by a sling from her shoulder. Her right hand was on the grip and a finger on the trigger. She was tall and although she wore mens bulky clothing, he could not help but notice a well developed figure. Her hair was done up in a ball at the back of her head and she wore a large fur hat. Her face was plain, not pretty, but not ugly by any means. Her lips were large and looked as though she was pouting over something.
