Becoming an Agent-Based Modeller covers the theory and practice of agent-based modelling (ABM) from a novice to intermediate level. Structured to mirror a course, the book takes readers through the full development of an agent-based model, from research question, conceptualisation and design of the model, through to what to do when your model is finished.

The book offers a theoretical overview of the epistemology and methodology of agent-based modelling as well as integration with other methods such as participatory approaches. The core, practical part of the book is an extended tutorial, demonstrating how to build an empirical agent-based model from scratch and use it in research. Using NetLogo as the programming language, the tutorial model concerns protective health behaviour in response to an epidemic. This incorporates all the key features of agent-based modelling: personal attitudes, the influence of social norms, and the spatial environment (in the form of local epidemic risk). The tutorial is organised by the practice of agent-based modelling project, and includes the conceptualisation stage, the operationalisation and implementation, experimentation and interpretation. The book also outlines how the ABM model can be applied to other contexts and social applications.
