The book commences with the hero as a young man just qualified as an air force pilot and moves on through his life describing various wars and major occurrences affecting his life. He is drafted to a USA carrier and then Vietnam, where he finishes military life. He studies medicine, assists the Flying Doctor Service, then develops a large market-garden export company with a Japanese partner. Here he finds the computer Orack, and life takes a different tack. The president of the USA discovers their talents and employs both of them in the White House. They become involved in Middle East politics, blackmail, and business corruption. His wife is assassinated, and again, his life changes. He meets his second wife back in Australia, and together, the basis of the other books of the trilogy is formed. Magic, illusion, and witchcraft enter the story where space travel, evil tycoons, and business manipulation become the normal.

Aussie Pilot finds the life of David to be quite ordinary. He has a relatively idealistic childhood before entering into the Air Force which soon brings him to the United States. His life takes several new directions as he finds himself deeply involved in politics, studying medicine, and developing his own company. But nothing can prepare him for the two biggest changes of his life: his budding romance with Helen and the mysterious abilities he acquires that are the key to a secret world. After tragedy strikes, David struggles to pick up the pieces as he finds a new beginning for his life and is brought further into a world of magic.

David is a gifted pilot, trained doctor, devoted husband, and sought-after political consultant at various stages of his life. He comes of age as a pilot during wartime in Vietnam and then the Falkland Islands, travels the world on a yacht, and eventually runs successful businesses. His life story is narrated as detailed vignettes of military life, career exploration, marriage, and fatherhood. All appears straightforward and realistic in the hands of Johnson who seems to be narrating a pilot’s life—heroic but ordinary—until Orack the supercomputer is introduced midway through the book. Suddenly, the realism of war and romance competes with alien intrigue, sometimes with uneven results. A genre tug of war begins to play out on the pages. Orack’s alien world, mission, and backstory reveal glimmers of Johnson’s talent for writing science fiction and constructing fantastical adventures in space and on Earth. When Orack confers special powers on David, his squadron, and his family, the story is opened up to wild encounters of mind control, telepathy, and creative and intellectual superiority.
