Exiled by his uncle even if not in name, Yudhishtira is determined to gain allies, something he cannot do when under the eyes of his uncle's and cousins' spies in Varanavata. Faking his death may seem a bit extreme, but he's sure he has no choice. In any case, Suyodhana, his hated cousin, will be blamed for it, so it's a win for him.
