Rachel is in the kitchen, warm and safe.

Her father is in the trenches, cold and afraid.

When Rachel makes biscuits for her father, she adds the love, warmth and hope that he needs.

This is a touching story of a family torn apart by war but brought together through the powerful simplicity of Anzac biscuits.

ANZAC Biscuits delicately entwines the desolation of life on the frontline of war with the tenderness of life on the home front.

WRITE A REVIEW

a modern connection for young children

I used this book in several 4-5 year old classes. It has simple words and illustrations. Before I began I made reference to what you might send in a parcel to someone you loved. When the story is ready slowly the children notice the detail in the pictures. Look at the pictures of stoves in the 'olden days'. Of course we were inspired to also make ANZAC biscuits. I recommend this book as it deals with the effect of war - separation from family rather than fighting.

A Must Read

The book was amazing to read to my Year 1 class. The text put our ANZAC Day service into perspective. The relationship between making the biscuits and the war front was extremely effective. The book generated so many questions about the topic. There is now a queue waiting in quiet and paired reading time.
