Anna and Barbara Fienberg
"'Well' Said Tashi 'It was like this'..."
"On Sunday mornings we'd all lie in bed with our books, lost in magical wardrobes, witches’ spells, genies’ magic… What we were going to read next was just as important in our family as what was for lunch!" says Anna.
Anna started writing stories when she was eight but never imagined becoming an author. She studied psychology, fascinated by the dark world of dreams. She gave up counselling after an unfortunate incident with an enraged man and a chair (he missed!), began writing and scored what she calls the best job in the world.
"Working for School Magazine was a treat," Anna says. "I couldn't believe you could get paid for sitting back comfortably in your chair, cappuccino in hand, reading over a thousand books a year. Heaven!"
Of course, as an editor she also had to write reviews and articles, stories and plays. One of those stories for School Magazine later became her first book.
"Tashi began as a conversation with my mother. She was telling me how, when she was a child, she used to tell whoppers — creative fibs, tall stories — and the kids would crowd around, dying to hear the latest tale. We began talking about a character like her — a character who told fantastic stories — and over many cups of tea we cooked up Tashi." — Anna Fienberg
What kinds of books do Anna and Barbara Fienberg write?
They write children's books, best known for the Tashi series — imaginative, folklore-tinged short adventures and tall tales featuring ghosts, genies, giants, Baba Yaga, phoenixes and similar mythical elements.
What is the Tashi series and where should I start?
The Tashi series is the authors' flagship set of children's stories starring the resourceful Tashi. Good starting points are The Great Big Enormous Book of Tashi (an omnibus) or the original early Tashi book. For very young children, try the My First Tashi board-book editions.
Do I need to read the Tashi books in order?
The individual Tashi titles are numbered but are largely episodic adventures. Many can be read as stand-alone stories, although reading a collected volume or the early books provides a convenient introduction to the character.
What age or reading level are their books aimed at?
Their work targets children — from My First Tashi for toddlers and preschoolers to early primary readers for the paperback Tashi adventures.
Where can I find a complete list of their books or information about awards?
This Booktopia page lists many Tashi titles and collections but does not list awards. For a full bibliography or award information, check publisher or author official sites, library catalogues or major booksellers.
