The culmination of over 30 years' teaching and textbook writing, this is a comprehensive, self-contained textbook on quantum physics and chemistry as well as the structure of matter at an introductory and intermediate level. Compared to other works, this is more systematic in its presentation of the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics and their applications to simple quantum systems, while being less descriptive in the presentation of the basic structures of matter, since the aim is for a qualitative understanding via the simplest possible models. The text is also less demanding in terms of mathematical formalism and methods of exact or approximate solutions of the Schrodinger equation, and less congested, since it omits those topics of no immediate usefulness toward a basic understanding. Featuring the fundamental principles and calculation tools (both exact and approximate) of quantum mechanics with a range of empirical information and experimental data from the real world, the author discusses topics ranging from the chemistry of carbon to semiconductors, right up to the interaction of light and matter. He combines theoretical rigor without overburdening the reader with hard calculations and focuses instead on problem-solving. Supplementary online material includes electronic multiple-choice self-examination questions, a computer lab using Mathematica, sample tests taken from actual exams, theory supplements with carefully guided problems, the figures in PowerPoint format, and a full solutions manual with 50 representative problems. With its goal of making quantum physics teachable in a more demanding manner from as early as the entry level of a general physics course, this textbook is suitable for applied and technical courses for physicists, chemists, materials scientists and engineers.
