This substantially revised and updated second edition of The Marshals of Alexander's Empire (1992) examines Alexander's most important officers, who commanded army units and were involved in military and political deliberations. Chapters on these men have been expanded, giving greater attention to personalities, bias in the sources, and the social as well as military setting, including more on familial connections and regional origins in an attempt to create a better understanding of factions. The major confrontations, military and political, are treated in greater detail within the biographies, and a discussion of the organization and command structure of the Makedonian army has been added.

Industry Reviews

Enthusiasts of Alexander the Great, as well as scholars and students, will be delighted by this thoroughly revised edition of an essential book for the study of the last decades of the fourth century BC. It will no doubt sit on the shelves of every university library.

- Professor Fabienne Marchand, Universite de Fribourg, Switzerland

  • Fabienne Marchand, Universite de Fribourg, Switzerland

"The first edition of the book routinely features in my bibliographies, and indeed there is no doubt that it is a must-have for any University library where Ancient History is taught, and even for libraries with more general purposes. Any scholar and student working on the period covered by the book will feel the need to use it at some point... I recommend the book for publication. There is no doubt that after 22 years a second edition of this fundamental work for the period of Alexander the Great and that of the Diadochi is necessary, and that it will appeal to a vast community of students and scholars."

  • Prof. Michael Arnush, Skidmore College, USA

"As with the first edition, Waldemar Heckel's revised presentation of the key members of the Macedonian military in the age of Philip II and Alexander will be a masterpiece of research, erudition and utility for scholars and (somewhat advanced) students."
