"the mix of traditional Japanese and Hawaiian folklore with some contemporary sci-fi and fantasy elements makes for a fresh and distinctive read." -Kirkus Reviews
Adaptively Radiant is a fast paced, adventure packed supernatural story of discovery and exploration-with a mix of traditional Japanese and Hawaiian folklore.
While on a summer vacation in Japan, Justin Toshi Blackwood attends a birthday party for his cousin Kaito and begins to bond with estranged relatives. The two young men share a great-grandfather and soon realize they have each inherited a mysterious family heirloom with one receiving a folding knife and the other a pocket watch.
After discovering that the knife opens a secret compartment in the old watch containing a tiny hidden map, they hike out it into the forest along a riverbed to locate a jar containing the Nine Stones. Each grayish-blue river rock has an animal engraved on one side and a location etched in kanji on the other.
So begins an exciting, Pacific-leaping scavenger hunt where the cousins must collaborate their efforts during nine supernatural encounters and recover remarkable objects of grand significance. Along the way, they unite with Justin's loyal sister Melia and new friend Yori as the four companions try to unlock a magical family secret. Will they survive the perilous journey and unravel the mystery?
Adaptively Radiant is the first published fiction novel by Joseph E. Henning
Industry Reviews
"A Pacific-leaping fantasy debut tells the story of two relatives on a journey to discover a magical family secret. The mix of traditional Japanese and Hawaiian folklore with some contemporary sci-fi and fantasy elements makes for a fresh and distinctive read." - Kirkus Reviews
"The atmospheric style of writing is truly enchanting, transporting us first to Japan then into the otherworldly sensations that the boys experience with a real sense of cultural knowledge. Overall, Adaptively Radiant is a modern fairy tale with plenty of heart." - K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite
"The story takes twists and thought-provoking turns all of which led to an extremely exciting and unpredictable ending. I simply enjoyed reading this book written by a very creative author." - Team Golfwell
"I really enjoyed Adaptively Radiant, and I'd recommend it if you're looking for a high paced, action packed novel, with a focus on travel and exploring different lands and culture." - Renee G. for NetGalley
"I found the storyline of Adaptively Radiant a mixture of travel writing, which was very good, and mysterious quest. I was enthralled by the descriptions of Japanese and Hawaiian locations and foggy Morro Bay in California is beautifully brought to life." - Charles Remington for Readers' Favorite
"Adaptively Radiant chronicles exotic voyage of two young cousins across islands in Japan, Hawaii, and West Coast of America after they stumble upon a mysterious pouch containing nine stones of significant importance. Henning expertly depicts the traditional folklore of Japan and Hawaii against a contemporary backdrop but the best of all is his rich portrayal of the Japanese and Hawaiian settings and exploration of the misty Morro Bay in California." - The Prairies Book Review
on
- They veer off the main highway onto a private road that travels away from the ocean. A thin row of tall bamboo lines both sides of the narrow roadway that continues 150 feet before dead-ending at a lavish, single-story, traditional Japanese-style home. The entire property is surrounded by an eight-foot-high maroon wooden fence with three separate entrance gates, one in the front, next to the house, and two others in opposite corners of the triangular-shaped backyard.
- The blade comes to a natural stopping point and the temperature gauge separates from the watch face, revealing a tiny piece of folded paper no larger than a pinky nail.
- Thousands of tiny florescent green lights suddenly appear in a miniature tornado of swirling illumination.
- Now less than ten feet away, the canines are certainly within lunging distance, and Kaito fears the worst has yet to come. He calls out loudly, trying to scare them off. "Go away. What do you want from me?"
- Justin feels immensely flattered by her kind words and gesture. He reaches down to gently brush his hand across hers, and she reciprocates by folding her fingers around his as they make a connection.
- Melia zips past a silver convertible rental car stuffed with tourists and luggage. She is eighteen years old and a recent high school graduate with plans to attend the UH Maui campus in the fall. "You will have to fill me in on all the juicy details. I can't wait to hear more about her and your vacation."
- He squints down the shoreline to see a shadowy band of torchbearers emerge from the ocean, closely followed by a large group of apparitions dressed in battle gear. Some of the ghostly figures are clothed in decorative helmets, others wear cloaks, and all carry menacing weapons of death ranging from long spears to thumping clubs.
- At the exact moment when the lights go out, he sees a convoluted landscape image emerge in the bonfire backdrop and undergoes another bout of vertigo.
