Forty years after the Great Upheaval reshaped the continents and wiped out most of humanity, the survivors rebuilt under a unified world government determined not to repeat the mistakes that nearly ended civilization. Vast forests were replanted to heal the planet, cities were redesigned smaller and pushed underground to protect the surface, and the Forest Rangers emerged as guardians of the new world—tasked with defending both the trees and the fragile balance of Earth's ecosystem.

Jacob, the younger Sergeant at Quadrant 105, lives a quiet, predictable life—until a routine grizzly relocation takes a strange turn. After dropping the bear off in a mountain meadow, Jacob suddenly senses he's being watched, and spinning around, he glimpses the face of a beautiful woman hiding among the vine maples on the edge of the meadow. Moving across the slope, they come across more tracks on the hillside, and could tell now that the woman was being dragged north against her will. Reaching the rock face, Trish's heat source was eight feet up on the rock face above a small ledge. And appeared to be coming straight out of the rock wall—until Jacob threw a rock at the spot and it vanished.

Carefully passing through the laser projection concealing the entrance, Jacob and Chloe get about thirty feet before the tunnel walls in front and behind them suddenly slam shut, and the walls on either
