Set in a small factory town and centered around Chamberlain Mills, two men are caught between their deep affection for each other and the harsh constraints of early twentieth-century British society.
The story begins on an ordinary day in 1926 when the established owner of Chamberlain Mills, Albert Chamberlain, offers a position to Liam Atkinson, a struggling university graduate. What starts as an act of generosity blossoms into a quiet partnership, with Liam becoming both a trusted business manager and a hidden companion, moving into Albert's home under a social pretense that none dare openly question. For a decade, they build a delicate but happy life of shared Sundays and shared secrets.
But their fragile world is disrupted. As Albert turns sixty, his health begins a private decline, prompting him to hand the factory fully to Liam. When personal desire collides with familial duty, local resentments, and the watchful eyes of a community bound by traditional norms, devastating choices must be made.
