"Villette" is the last novel by Charlotte Brontë, which in the opinion of critics even overshadowed "The Strange Fate of Jane Eyre". Its heroine, Lucy Snowe, leaves England, escaping painful memories, and works as a teacher at a French boarding school in Villette. There, she unintentionally witnesses a stormy romance between Dr. John, a handsome young Englishman whom she herself has a hidden affection for, and the beautiful coquette Ginerva Fanshawe. Ginerva eventually abandons her doctor, preferring her love of luxury. Lucy is confronted with her own longing and suffering. The story of Lucy Snowe is one of the most insightful studies of woman consciousness in English literature.
