The phase of Transportation Engineering which deals with planning and geometrical design of roads, streets, and adjoining lands and with traffic operations there on for safe, convenient and economic transportation of persons and goods is known as Traffic Engineering.

It focuses mainly on research and construction of the infrastructure necessary for safe and efficient traffic flow, such as road geometry, sidewalks and crosswalks, segregated cycle facilities, shared lane marking, traffic signs, road surface markings and traffic lights.

Present day roads are to serve all types of traffic from pedestrian and animal driven traffic to automobile traffic including military vehicles and are thus liable to traffic congestion. So, to avoid traffic congestion and to provide efficient free and rapid flow of all types of traffic, the studies of traffic characteristics and traffic operations have become essential before planning and designing of any Transportation system. Now these aspects of planning and geometrical design of road and traffic studies have become so important that they constitute a separate branch of civil engineering, known as Traffic Engineering and the person who performs these traffic studies is called traffic engineer.

Introduction

Traffic flow can be defined as a mathematical study of the movement of vehicles on road. It involves road user and vehicle character and other aspects of vehicular traffic. Traffic engineering grows with the field character of traffic and this character can be described in mathematical model form to understand the behavior well. This subject is important to a transportation engineer to provide a good knowledge of vehicular movement, improved technique to control, regulation and management. Development of traffic engineering involves statistics, applied maths, psychology and operational research many emerging research theories are entering day by day. Road traffic cause congestion, queuing and delay occur in congested areas. Delay cause economic loss. A study on speed and delay is important. Headway gap between successive vehicles will help in design of intersection and operating facilities. Theory of probability and statistics help to understand the functions in a better way....................

This book has been written for the BE/B.Tech students of All University with latest syllabus for ECE, EEE, CSE, IT, Mechanical, Bio Medical, Bio Tech, BCA, MCA and All B.Sc Department Students.

The basic aim of this book is to provide a basic knowledge in Traffic Engineering.

Traffic Engineering for engineering students of degree, diploma & AMIE courses and a useful reference for these preparing for competitive examinations.

All the concepts are explained in a simple, clear and complete manner to achieve progressive learning.
