What if time, not money, is the real currency? Every economic framework in history has tried to explain what value is and where it comes from. Adam Smith said labour. Ricardo dissolved capital into stored labour. Marx formalised socially necessary labour time. The marginalists abandoned labour entirely and replaced it with desire. None of them finished the job. This book argues that they were all circling the same insight without completing it. Value is time. Not labour in the narrow sense, but time in both its forms: the hours that go into making things (embedded time) and the hours that constitute a good life (lived time). Money is a claim on future time, and the claim drifts from the value it represents - slowly in stable periods, catastrophically in unstable ones. The framework is traced through twenty-five centuries of thought, from Antiphon and Aristotle to Kautilya, Confucius, and the Buddhist concept of impermanence, then through Smith, Ricardo, and Marx to GDP and modern monetary policy. Each tradition grasped part of the picture. None integrated what this book calls the three missing pieces: the meta-layer (time spent deciding how to allocate time), the money/value distinction as a structural feature, and lived time as the purpose that production serves. The book translates the framework into the reader's own financial life: salary as an exchange rate, a mortgage as a claim on thirteen years, inflation as the evaporation of stored hours. It examines banks, debt, monetary policy, inequality, taxation, automation, and education through the time lens. It names what GDP misses and why. And it honestly confronts where the framework bends. Its central finding: time converts to money, but money never converts back to time. The equation runs one direction only.
