THE WINTER MURDER
by Eliis Vance
Every winter, someone disappears.
For ten years, the disappearances have followed the same disturbing pattern. One person vanishes from the same Stockholm neighborhood on the same winter date. No body. No ransom. No explanation. And every case has been quietly filed away as unrelated.
Until Detective Karin Sjoberg discovers something the police never noticed.
Every missing person had visited the same cafe shortly before disappearing.
Cafe November.
As Karin begins digging into the old cases, she finds a trail of forgotten photographs, altered police records, hidden rooms, abandoned identities, and names that were never meant to be connected.
Then she finds something impossible.
An old surveillance photograph from years before she became a detective shows Karin herself sitting inside Cafe November.
Across from a woman who disappeared that same winter.
The woman is Helena Marklund.
And Karin remembers her.
Or at least, she thinks she does.
The investigation soon forces Karin back into the most painful mystery of her own life: the disappearance of her older sister, Sofia, more than twenty years earlier.
But Sofia's disappearance was never what Karin believed.
Neither was her mother's death.
Neither was her father's grief.
And the people Karin trusted most may have known the truth all along.
Hidden beneath Stockholm is a forgotten network of rooms once created to help people escape dangerous lives and disappear safely. But somewhere along the way, those rooms became something else.
Someone learned how to use them.
Someone began watching the watchers.
And someone has been waiting for Karin to remember what she saw as a child.
As the snow closes over Stockholm, Karin is drawn deeper into a conspiracy built from secrets, false identities, buried photographs, and carefully manufactured disappearances.
The closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous one question becomes:
What if the people who disappeared were never the real victims?
And what if the person who has been missing all these years is not the one Karin thinks she's looking for?
