Earth is dying. Not in a generation. Not in a century. Now.
Humanity's answer is the largest construction project in the history of life: a Dyson sphere enclosing the sun, forty thousand years in the building, its inhabited surface sixteen million times the area of the planet being quarried to build it. Generations are born, spend a lifetime on a structure they will never see finished, and die with the work at five percent, seven, twelve. Then it is finished. And every civilization in the Orion Arm understands what it means.
Ten thousand and forty-two species were contacted by the Peace Initiative. Every one of them, in the end, treated the Sphere as a problem that needed to be solved. After the siege, after a war fought with a construction fleet of four million converted ships, humanity's Council confronts a calculation whose every line is reasonable and whose conclusion should not exist: launch self-replicating ships to make certain, forever, that no one can ever come again.
The story is told across half a million years by a narrator who lived through nearly all of it, read the transcripts, drank the cold tea, and voted yes. There is no faster than light travel here. No warp drive, no jump gate, no fleet arriving in the nick of time, because there is no nick of time when the nearest help is forty years away at the speed the universe actually allows. A message takes years. A war is fought by mail. A man can give an order, grow old, and die before anyone learns whether it worked.
The Sphere runs from a kitchen on a dying Earth to the last survey of the last ship at the end of the universe, and asks the question that survives the end of everything: what does a species owe the rest of creation for its own safety?
