In a weather-beaten cottage near Terneuse, seventeenth-century Holland, Philip Vanderdecken lives under the shadow of a sealed room, a dying mother, and a secret that has poisoned the household for years. Restless, proud, and desperate to escape poverty, he longs to go to sea, but his mother's fearful warnings and sudden collapse draw him into a mystery far darker than want. As she bleeds to death, she reveals the truth about Philip's father: a Catholic sailor from Amsterdam whose final voyage ended in blasphemy, storm, and a dreadful curse that may have condemned him to wander beyond the grave. A sealed letter offers the only hope of release, and Philip, stunned by grief, resolves to find it. His search leads him into a wider world of uncanny rumor, hard duty, and maritime peril. At the Cape, he uncovers unsettling doubts about the one-eyed pilot Schriften, then joins a homeward-bound brig only to be swept into a crippled Dutch fleet battling scurvy, pride, and mutiny on the road to the East Indies. Caught between brutal commanders and the demands of survival, Philip faces a voyage shaped by tragedy, supernatural dread, and the relentless call of the sea.
