In the autumn of AD 9, he marches with Varus and three Roman legions into the Teutoburg Forest. Then rain destroys the road, mud alters distance, and the ground makes every order obsolete. One by one, the instruments that have governed his life begin to fail: the rod, the cord, the groma, and finally the count itself.
