No one was conscious when the hydrogen reservoir blew apart and sent the Constellation careening off course, but Rene was quickly revived to deal with the situation. Now, with hundreds of years to go before his spaceship will reach its destination and unable to return to cryogenic hibernation, Rene knows he will never again speak to another human being. He has become the loneliest repairman of all.
But the damage is more severe than expected and can't be fixed by turning a wrench or reprogramming a computer. To salvage the mission, Rene must confront the most profound question ever asked: 'is there hope for us after we die?' In the emptiness of interstellar space, unfounded faith or feel-good platitudes provide no comfort or reassurance.
