For eleven years she ran the House and spent her heats alone. Then the laird ordered her to take the week off.
Elspeth Baird runs Glenmoor House, and the House cannot run without her, so her heat week has always been a silent ritual behind her own door. Iona Fraser is the alpha vet who comes up the glen for the estate's dogs and has watched the housekeeper for three winters without saying a word.
A blizzard seals the single-track road behind the vet's Land Rover. The only alpha left in the empty lodge is the one Elspeth has been pretending not to look at.
Her control goes first. Iona's patience goes second. When the thaw comes, Elspeth hands the laird a new rota with her own name off it one week a season and Iona's name in her rooms for good.
