A single volume collection of essays that were originally published as individual monographs, introductory guides to some of the world's greatest philosophers, such as Socrates, Descartes and Russell by some of the world's leading contemporary thinkers, including Roger Scruton (on Spinoza), Jonathan Ree on Heidegger and Terry Eagleton on Marx (an unusual inclusion). As well as providing an introduction to their subject's life and work, each author was also asked to examine in closer detail a particular aspect of their thinking so, for example, Ray Monk explores Bertrand Russell's relationship with mathematics, while Terry Eagleton discusses Marx's views on freedom. This concentration on ideas (rather than, say, history) provides a fresh and engaging way into philosophy as it is practised and lends the subject an admirable immediacy. (Kirkus UK)
