She felt like she'd been kicked in the stomach by one of her father's camels. Why hadn't they posted a guard on the tomb? Everything else had gone as well as it could have. The soldier had taken her silver and her man had come off the cross breathing. They had taken him straight to the tomb, bandaged him and left him until nightfall, all to fool the bastard Caiaphas' spies. Now, returning to rescue him and leave Jerusalem, they'd found the tomb plundered by thieves and her man gone. For a moment despair swept over her, almost driving her to her knees. She took a breath. She'd come too far, been through too much to give up now. Mary of Magdala was no quitter.
