On the frontier world of Topaz, a crash landing, a broken alliance, and a hidden arsenal of forbidden technology ignite a struggle for freedom that could reshape two cultures. Andre Norton's The Defiant Agents delivers fast-moving science fiction with tribal politics, alien danger, and the uneasy power of advanced weapons in the hands of desperate rebels. When a massive ship slams into Topaz's orbital defenses, Dr. James Ruthven, human crew, and intelligent coyote-like beings are thrown into chaos, while forty sleepers in a mind-based experiment called Redax become part of a struggle between control and survival. In the mountains and plains below, Travis and his Apache allies confront the Reds' domination of the Tatars and Mongols, testing fragile trust with the shaman Menlik and learning that the enemy's strength depends on surveillance, coercion, and mind-controlling machines. By destroying a helicopter, then striking a hidden Red ship with stampeding horses and alien relics, they help break the Reds' grip—but at a terrible moral cost. As victory turns to reflection, Travis and his companions face the harder task of guarding dangerous knowledge and building a shared future from the ruins of war.
