On the far side of the Moon, Pop Young lives alone in a bleak shack above the Big Crack mine, where his dangerous work keeps a buried colony alive. Rumors cling to his uncanny ability to endure the surface, but the truth is darker: a brutal loss has shattered his memory, and he is rebuilding his life one recovered fragment at a time. Through sketching, he draws back his wife, children, and vanished home, while the sight of the frightened Sattell keeps stirring a buried suspicion that this same man murdered his family. What begins as a chance encounter on Earth becomes an obsessive pursuit that follows Sattell across continents and out to the Moon, where wealth, guilt, and paranoia tighten into a tense confrontation. As the mine's valuable crystals draw dangerous attention, an ill-handled rocket, a red-haired hijacker, and a diamond theft plot threaten the colony's fragile order. Pop responds with cool cunning, destroying the ship and its thieves before turning to a strange, personal act of creation. In the end, survival, revenge, and art merge as he carves a keepsake from the wreckage, determined to reclaim his past and the life stolen from him.
