Caroline moved out of the woods and onto the shoulder of the two-lane road. Turning she waited for a police cruiser to pass looking back into the woods like she was waiting for someone. When he didn't stop, she breathed a sigh of relief and turned toward oncoming traffic with her thumb out asking for a ride.
She stepped back from the pavement as a tractor trailer came around the curve and headed in her direction. She did not try to get a ride with him. she had experience with other truckers and while most were decent did not want to take a chance. Since she was at the top of a mountain grade, she moved over to the heavy brush next to the brake check sign and stepped back out of sight. She made note of her grandfather's logo on the door of the truck. She started towards the cab planning on asking for a ride. She heard the growl of a diesel engine as another truck fought its way up the hill....
