Elise Vance has built a career as a rational, unshakeable internet skeptic by debunking famous haunted locations using thermal cameras, decibel meters, and cold logic. To her, every apparition is just expanding pipes or settling foundations, and every fear is simply poor observation. But her rigid worldview is tested when she steps into the basement of Alder House to investigate an ancient, covered cheval mirror brought from Prague in the early 1800s. Behind the heavy velvet cloth embroidered with warding symbols, the glass reflects a distortion logic cannot explain: a endless, violet-lit corridor containing a tall, linen-wrapped entity that turns its featureless head toward her.
Though Elise tries to convince herself the experience was a momentary optical trick or sleep deprivation, the phenomenon begins following her back to her daily life. What starts as subtle anomalies in ordinary household mirrors quickly escalates into terrifying distortions across every reflective surface—from bathroom sinks to television screens and dark phone displays. As her mind fractures and her isolation turns into desperation, Elise goes to extreme lengths to purge her world of all reflections, only to realize that the entity isn't tied to glass, but to the act of observation itself. REFRACTIVE is a atmospheric, slow-burn psychological horror story by H. Jason Schulz that explores the terrifying boundary between rational skepticism, perception, and unrelenting dread.
