This book is a collection of thirteen essays, some previously unpublished, on Byron and Wordsworth. Drawing on psychoanalysis, textual criticism, and historical scholarship, Manning explores the territory jointly mapped by the works that compel our attention and the theories by which we explain our engagement. Juxtaposing Byron and Wordsworth, Manning examines the situation of literature in the Romantic period and the interaction between the idea of originality the Romantics fostered and the means of production through which they expressed themselves.
Industry Reviews
"A subtle and rewarding collection....All thirteen of its essays are lustrous."--Modern Philology "Manning's articles and essays have set a consistently high standard, and it is nice to have them in collected form."--The Romantic Movement "A typical essay in this collection of 13 begins with a deceptively simple point about, or obscure text from, Wordsworth (or Byron), and asks questions so artfully provocative that by the end of 20 pages or so the literary career of one poet or the other...is placed in a whole new light....The collection exemplifies the way in which a responsive and artful (and extremely well informed) reader can incorporate the insights of 'new' literary theory and history in a way that gives excitingly new imaginative life to these two writers and their worlds."--Choice "What the reader of Reading Romantics must find out first hand, and cannot from a review, is the extent and depth of (in particular) the historical narratives that the various chapters display. And one must remark on the interest that each narrative holds for the reader, attesting to Manning's own powers of scholarship and powers of telling."--Studies in Romanticism "An impressive and important book."--Wordsworth Circle
