Comprehension strikes when animal control officer Nate Chee spots three massive grey dogs near the savaged bodies of a couple of animal abusers.
Despite his horror of what was done to the so-called victims, Nate believes justice has been exacted. His job has made it clear that too often cruel or neglectful owners never pay for their actions. However, this time they paid the ultimate price.
Still, murder can't be condoned. He has no choice but to tell law enforcement where to look for the greys.
Now that she has returned to her roots in southern Oregon, teacher Rachelle Reams is thrilled to re-connect with her step-father, a former POW. Her only concern is Joe's willingness to let the dogs he found on a Hopi reservation run free. She owes Joe so much, loves the lonely old man so deeply.
When Nate tells Joe and Rachelle he believes the greys are killers, Rachelle jumps to Joe's defense. The greys have given Joe's life meaning. Besides, the abusers got what they deserved.
She fights her attraction to the complicated Nate. He feels the same way toward her. Circumstances beyond their control have made them enemies.
For the dogs, life is simple. They do what primal instinct demands.
And they've just begun.
