The Mystical Journey of Chaitanya

Before Gandhi, before Martin Luther King, before nonviolent protest became a force for social change, there was Chaitanya.

Five hundred years ago, in Bengal, a brilliant young scholar abandoned worldly success to become a wandering monk and one of history's most influential spiritual visionaries. At a time of brutal caste barriers and entrenched social exclusion, Chaitanya championed a radical idea: that every human being possesses equal spiritual worth. Through public chanting, fearless compassion, and a message of universal love, he inspired a movement that has spread around the globe, challenging injustice and setting a precedent for many of today’s nonviolent peace efforts.

Acclaimed author Joshua M. Greene draws on rare primary sources and a lifetime of scholarship to bring this extraordinary story to life. With absorbing you-are-there literary appeal, The Mystical Journey of Chaitanya follows its protagonist from gifted prodigy to ecstatic mystic, from social reformer to revered saint—a saga that unfolds with drama, warmth, and profound spiritual insight.

Part biography, part spiritual adventure, and part exploration of humanity's search for meaning, The Mystical Journey of Chaitanya introduces readers to one of the most influential yet least known figures in the history of spiritual social action. For readers seeking wisdom, purpose, and hope in a divided world, this inspiring narrative offers a timeless reminder: genuine transformation begins not with power or ideology, but with an awakening of the heart.
