Nora Ellis is San Francisco's last old-fashioned matchmaker: a notebook, an instinct, and a fierce belief that love can't be computed. The trouble is, nobody wants a matchmaker anymore — not since "ONE", the app whose artificial intelligence promises, with a 99.4% success rate, your one guaranteed soulmate.
So when Nora tears ONE apart in an interview that goes viral, the app's maker offers her a challenge she can't refuse: let the algorithm match her, the nonbeliever. If it fails, they save her business. If it succeeds... she becomes their spokeswoman.
Nora signs up to sabotage the test. The algorithm matches her with "Ethan Roy" — the arrogant engineer who built the AI with his own hands. And it flatly refuses to offer her anyone else. *No other match.* Ethan is as appalled as she is: being paired with his app's loudest enemy is a nightmare. So they strike a deal — prove, together, that the machine got it wrong.
Except every disastrous date, every counter-test, every act of sabotage... only proves the algorithm right.
Between a CEO ready to monetize their "love story" into gold, a secret Ethan is keeping about why he really built the AI, and a treacherous heart that starts beating for the man she's supposed to despise, Nora will have to answer the one question the machine can't decide for her: when you're guaranteed the right person, is there anything left to choose?
