John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was a British philosopher with the focus on the political and economical fields. He is now considered one of the 'fathers' of liberalism, defending the conception of individual freedom that faces the unlimited governmental control. His philosophical works are: 'On Liberty', 'A System Of Logic' and 'Utilitarianism'. 'On Liberty', first published in 1859, is considered one of the key works of John Stuart Mill introducing the ideas of utilitarianism. In this ethical system Mill stresses the conflict between the individual liberty and the authority. Mill thought that the democratic ideas of the past led not the sincere freedom but to the tyranny of the majority. This work had a major effect on the liberal thought all over the world.
