Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was a British novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, travel writer, best known for her gothic novels. "Mathilda" is the gothic novel, written between August 1819 and February 1820. Narrating from the deathbed, the main character Matilda tells the story of her unnamed father's confession of incestuous love for her, followed by his suicide by drowning. It is believed, that the act of writing this novel distracted Mary Shelley from her depression, initiated by the death of her children, Clara and William. So, the novel is impregnated by the Romantic themes of incest and suicide. "Mathilda" is the classic example of gothic literature, written by the one of the most famous female authors, so you will undoubtedly derive pleasure, reading it.
