Malachite

What inspired Ashley Andersen to transition from being a book reviewer to writing her debut novel?

Ashley Andersen built a substantial platform as a book reviewer across Instagram and TikTok, amassing over 200,000 followers collectively before penning Malachite. This background in reviewing fantasy and romance novels likely provided her with deep insight into what readers crave in these genres, as well as an understanding of common tropes and storytelling techniques. Her experience analysing and discussing books publicly would have given her a unique perspective on crafting her own narrative, allowing her to blend reader expectations with fresh ideas in her debut work.

How does the three-unit system based on gemstones function within the magical world of Valmora Academy?

The academy's structure revolves around three distinct units named after precious stones: Malachite, Opal, and Agate, each presumably associated with different elemental powers and magical abilities. Students must be chosen by a unit during their initiation ceremony, suggesting the selection process involves some form of magical compatibility or calling rather than simple preference. This system creates a hierarchical structure within the academy that appears to influence social dynamics, allegiances, and presumably the type of combat training students receive as they prepare for war.

What makes this book appeal specifically to readers who enjoyed The Zodiac Academy and Fourth Wing?

Readers who loved those series will recognise similar core elements in Malachite, particularly the combination of rigorous magical training within an academy setting and high-stakes romantic tension. The emphasis on elemental magic systems, competitive dynamics amongst powerful students, and the slow-burn romance amidst dangerous circumstances mirrors what made those books successful. Additionally, the forced proximity element and found family themes create the same sense of intimate character development within a larger epic fantasy framework that fans of those series have come to expect.

How does Aria's family disgrace impact her experience at Valmora Academy beyond the obvious social challenges?

The execution of Aria's brother for allegedly practising dark magic and murdering four students creates a complex web of consequences that extend far beyond simple ostracism. Her brother's best friend Sebastian harbours particularly intense feelings about the situation, suggesting personal betrayal and unresolved grief that complicates their interactions. This family history also means Aria enters the academy under intense scrutiny, where any misstep could be interpreted as evidence of inherited darkness or criminal tendencies, making her investigation into her brother's true innocence extraordinarily dangerous.
