When a county commissioner claims that folks dying of natural causes have actually been murdered, Longarm thinks the man is seeing conspiracies in his sleep. But before he can give this well-connected fat cat the brush-off, U.S. Marshal Custis Long has to do his job and check it out.
What Longarm finds is a town divided between two factions—with him in the middle. It's a hard investigation—so he saddles up with pretty little fillies who know how to treat a weary marshal right.
