Eight hundred thousand people will be removed in thirty days and nobody has been told why.
The System has spoken twice in eighty days. The first time it took two hundred and seventy-eight million people below Level 5 and called it a Reduction. The second time it gave Zone 114 a deadline, a fraction, and one door out: a black tower on the north bank of the Calder with twenty floors in it and a summit that is exempt.
Sixty-one people go in at midnight on the eighth of September. Thirty-eight come out.
The floors are not what anybody expects. Some are combat and some are endurance, and the ones that take the most out of that party are the ones with nothing in them at all: a wall of brass tags that asks forty-seven exhausted people to rank themselves, a lectern that will let exactly one of them read the document the whole thing runs on, a veterinary surgery offering one restoration that lasts four hours.
Jake Turner is a Level 22 Survivor with a class nobody else has and a list of four thousand two hundred and sixty-one names in an order nobody chose. His sister is thirteen, holds the Register, and asks the questions that turn out to matter.
At the top there is a kitchen, a man who has been waiting a hundred and fourteen years, and a chair that can do three things, and every single one of them is a catastrophe.
This is the finale. Every question the trilogy has asked is answered here: what removal actually is, what grade is and why it was never disclosed, what the System is, who built it, what it is saving humanity
