Lean Technical Communication: Toward Sustainable Program Innovation assists technical communication undergraduate and graduate programs in achieving sustainability by offering a theoretically and empirically grounded programmatic model for lean technical communication. "Lean technical communication" refers to technologies and techniques that comprise an efficient and visible model of technical communication program work rooted in sustainability. To us, sustainability is a process that requires embracing flexible processes that advance programmatic aims and viability when competing for limited institutional resources without compromising the natural environment, ignoring needs of diverse populations, or endangering long term programmatic resilience. While our hope is that extremely limited resources are a short lived necessity, the field must acknowledge and respond to the long term impact of current environmental stressors and economic short falls on the way programs are run. However, we see this response as an opportunity to disrupt technical communication programs in productive ways that resist focusing on what is lacking but instead on how to help people better do the work they need to do.
