Lawrence and his wife Frieda arrived in Australia in 1922. 'Kangaroo' was written shortly after their arrival and contains vivid descriptions of the Australian countryside and people as well as a description of the Lawrences' treatment in England which made them leave the country. The structure of the novel shows the haste in which it is written but Lawrence's superb writing and ideas on the relationship between man and woman shine through.
