In Piperock, a rough frontier town where poker, bluffing, and a selective code of honor pass for law, the narrator introduces Runnin' Wolf, a towering, hard-drinking Indian gambler with a reputation for cheating that only grows with every bottle. Trouble arrives in style when Chief Axlegrease, an old medicine-show acquaintance turned oil-rich showman, rolls into town with a wagon, an elephant, lions, a tiger, a calliope, and a noisy entourage, turning the street into a carnival of bragging, suspicion, and comic one-upmanship. What begins as reunion and spectacle quickly becomes a frontier free-for-all as rival towns, opportunists, and would-be lawmen circle the outfit like vultures. When poker enters the picture, the stakes leap from money to horses, wagons, and the entire traveling menagerie. Cold-deck cheating, legal attachments, elephant mayhem, and territorial claims all collide, dragging Dirty Shirt, the narrator, Sheriff Scenery Sims, and the men of Yaller Horse into a series of slapstick disasters. In Piperock, every crisis becomes a gamble, and every gamble threatens to become a riot. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
