Lavender is trying to make her way in life as a starving artist. She is a writer, writing the great American novel, but she is burdened by student debt and a job that leaves her little time to actually write. That all has the possibility to change when she finds out her estranged uncle has left her millions of dollars after his death. But there are problems.
Being the high-minded idealist that she is, Lavender is concerned her uncle made his fortune from less than ethical and moral means. A part of her wants to be rid of it, using it to make the world a better place. But more importantly, it turns out there are strings attached to the money. Those strings include moving into her uncle's mansion and maintaining his large servant staff.
