Helena Griggs has buried two husbands, raised three children, and built a quiet, careful life on her own terms. She does not need rescuing, and she has long since stopped expecting it. Then Jack walks into her world, thirty years younger and entirely unprepared for a woman who refuses to be managed.
What starts as something simple slowly becomes harder to define. This is a later-in-life romance that takes its time, an older woman, younger man story that does not flinch from the reactions it stirs. Family members worry. An old flame interferes. A small town in the south of France adds its own opinions, loudly and often.
When Helena and Jack leave London behind for a neglected stone villa in Provence, the story shifts into something richer. This moving to France fiction brings curious neighbours, a mayor with his own agenda, and a renovation that uncovers more than cracked plaster. Beneath the romance runs a steady current of family drama and secrets, the kind that surface slowly and change how everyone sees each other.
Helena is not an easy woman to read, and the book does not make her one. Her past holds more than she lets on, and so does her business, run quietly and carefully outside the usual rules. This is a rebuilding life second chance romance with real wit and real stakes, written by a debut author who spent over twenty-five years covering sport, a world that taught him exactly how quickly a hero can become a villain.
For readers drawn to a reverse-age-gap romance with depth, humour, and a strong sense of place, Helena's story offers something that lingers long after the final page.
