  1. A telegraph station on the edge of the Atlantic. A war that never quite arrives, and a silence that does.

Silas Thorne is eighteen when he walks the last seven miles to Heart's Content, a cable station on the Newfoundland coast where the first message ever sent across the ocean floor came ashore. He expects to spend his war listening for U-boats. He doesn't expect Clara, already seated at her desk, already working, who will still be there twenty years later.

Hearts Content follows the two of them across two decades at a real telegraph station, through a wartime watch for a German submarine, a winter rescue at sea, a Cold War scare that brings a downed plane to the bottom of the bay, and the quiet Tuesday in 1962 when a single telegram ends a hundred years of work in one sentence.

Nothing here is said outright. What passes between Silas and Clara is carried instead in the objects they touch: an ink-stopper set the same precise distance from a ledger every morning, a cedar cradle that has never held a child and is never moved from the hearth, a hand worked numb at the key and warmed back to life in someone else's. The story is told the way these two people lived it, almost entirely without words.

Heart's Content is a quiet, exacting novella for readers of Annie Proulx's The Shipping News and the restraint of Hemingway, set at an actual transatlantic cable station whose real history runs from 1866 to the edge of the Cold War. It asks what twenty years adds up to when almost none of it is spoken aloud, and ends on the one line in the whole book that means exactly what it says.
